Energy Storage Systems

SISTEMAS-ARMAZENAMENTO.png

The Energy Storage Systems division plays a central role in advancing electrification and distributed generation technologies. Our researchers focus on developing power electronic converters and advanced control strategies that facilitate the efficient integration of storage systems with power grids and vehicle electrification applications.

The focus includes studies with batteries of different chemistries, supercapacitors, fuel cells and hydrogen storage systems, all with the aim of optimizing electrical energy storage.

The research developed at LEPO seeks to complement renewable sources, such as solar and wind, and develop solutions for applications in vehicle electrification, hybrid systems and isolated microgrids, areas in which energy storage plays a fundamental role in ensuring autonomy, stability and uninterrupted energy supply. Our work also includes investigations into auxiliary devices, such as energy management systems or cell balancing, estimates of the state of charge (SOC), state of health (SOH), state of temperature (SOT) and state of power (SOP), always aiming to maximize the useful life and efficiency of storage systems.

The division is aligned with the growing global movement towards decarbonization and energy transition, acting as a key link for greater insertion and integration of renewable sources and vehicle electrification.
